Twenty years ago, on 30 August 1999, in a remarkable show of courage and resolve, the people of Timor-Leste exercised their right to self-determination and voted overwhelmingly for independence. On 30 August 2019, Timor-Leste will officially mark this date and celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Popular Consultation. The event will begin from 26 August to 30 August 2019. The 20th Anniversary of the Popular Consultation also marks a significant milestone for Timor-Leste. As well as celebrating the anniversary of the birth of our nation, it also provides a special occasion to acknowledge the role that our friends and supporters have played in our development over the past two decades. The celebration in the country will last for a month with different activities held in the 12 Municipalities. Programs of the event can be found here.
