A Joint high-level IDPS mission went to Mogadishu, Somalia on the 9th of November 2015. The delegation included H.E. Minister Isabella Lovin, the co-chair of IDPS, Mr. Habib Mayar, Deputy General Secretary of g7+ Secretariat (representing g7+ chair), Mr. Mikael Lindval, Swedish Ambassador to Somalia and Swedish team from Stockholm.
The delegates met H.E. Mohamed Osman Jawari, the Speaker of Somali Parliament, H.E. Mohamed Omar Arte, Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia, Cabinet Ministers, Civil Society and Donor missions in Mogadishu.
The purpose of the mission was to appreciate the progress made in the New Deal implementation in Somalia and to discuss the challenges the government face in realizing the impact of the New Deal. Similar mission was conducted in 2014.
Somalia is one of the pilot couturiers which has actively implemented the New Deal. Cabinet Ministers responsible for each PSG (Peacebuilding and Statebuilding Goals) coordinate the implementation of the New Deal. The New Deal Compact was signed in 2013 to guide the development partnership between the government and donors.
Government authorities shared their experiences in promoting resilience and the challenges they face. Commending the efforts of IDPS members, the authorities reiterated their commitment to forging the New Deal principles. In addition, the Somali government expressed its willingness to share experiences and participate in peer-learning under the "fragile to fragile cooperation" with other g7+ members.
The High Level Partnership Forum on Somalia, which will be held in Istanbul, Turkey next year, will be an opportunity to further the political commitment to overcome challenges impeding the impact of the New Deal principles.
The delegates ensured the government of their cooperation to mobilize expertise and support to help the people and government of Somalia in restoring resilience. While a joint report of the mission will be released shortly, the g7+ secretariat and the IDPS co-chair team will explore opportunity to conduct a working level mission to follow up on the discussion in the coming months.
